My BRIDES Essay: Happily Ever Before

Wednesday, March 9th, 2016

By all accounts, I had a dream wedding with my husband Gus. But the planning—oh, the planning.

BRIDESCoverBright

After the six fast months we pulled our wedding off in Mexico, I finally understood the building stress that can turn some sweet women into Bridezillas. And I learned so much about seeing things “bright side up” that I wanted to share it.

So here’s my essay in Brides magazine: “Happily Ever Before.”

Calling all Single + Married Women: It’s Been Advice Month!

Wednesday, January 13th, 2016

I’ve been asked to share my positive thoughts on love for a few publications lately, so in case any of these stories might appeal to you, here they are…

1) First, I loved contributing to this piece called “That Single Life” in the brand new January/February 2016 issue of Women’s Health magazine.

WomensHealthSINGLE The Women’s Health features real women who have bucked the coupledom standards by doing things like buying a house single, having a baby single, and traveling single.

I spoke with writer Faye Brennan about why single women can rock whatever it is they damn want, which is the entire mindset behind my book Meeting Your Half-Orange: An Utterly Upbeat Guide to Using Dating Optimism to Find Your Perfect Match (Running Press).

Pick up the Jan/Feb issue of Women’s Health to read the full piece about “That Single Life,” but here’s my advice in part #3 about why it’s healthy to be “The Jet Setter” who is traveling solo:

Half-Orange Advice

2) For the story Dating as a Single Parent…If You Dare, I offered some advice for single mothers who are having a difficult time in their dating lives with writer Christine Coppa, who is a single mom herself. You can read the full story here on that one here on the USA Today Network’s Asbury Park Press site, but here’s a small snapshot of some my advice when it comes to where to meet your potential partners:

3) I also offered some advice for Woman’s Day magazine, about the 9 Important Signs Your Marriage Can Be Saved. I talked to the magazine about the positive signs of recognizing that your behavior might be affecting your partner’s behavior or when you both recognize how much you appreciate your family time. You can read the full piece here on Woman’s Day, but here, again, is a small snapshot of some of my advice:

The German Edition of BRIGHT SIDE UP

Wednesday, June 18th, 2014

One of the most fun aspects of putting out books is having other countries pick up and publish the titles. It’s fascinating to see how the international editions translate the titles and re-design the cover to what will most appeal to their readers.

And so, I bring you a recent international edition of my second book, Bright Side Up: 100 Ways to Be Happier Right Now, which is now selling in…Germany! In German, Immer Auf Der Sonnenseite translates to “Always On the Sunny Side.” And the subtitle translates to “100 Paths to a Good Mood.” (That’s a link to purchase the German edition on Amazon.com.)

One clear path to a good mood, by the way: polka dots.

My Writing Life: Inside the Author’s Studio

Wednesday, February 5th, 2014

I did a fun interview this week with my fabulous literary agent, Laurie Abkemeier, for a regular feature she calls “Inside the Authors Studio.” I got to share a photo of my writing space, showing my desk and bookshelves in my bright little office in Venice, CA—the better to write about “bright” things, of course.

I also got to share some of the secrets about my writing process—like when I feel I do my best writing, and whether or not I share my works-in-progress with anyone other than my editor/agent. I think it’s always fun to read about how other writers and authors work (and if they share their early drafts with people!) so I thought I’d give back to the pool and answer some of those questions myself. I hope you enjoy.

While you’re at it, poke around the rest of Laurie Abkemeier’s page for information on her other authors as well (and follow her on Twitter at twitter.com/LaurieAbkemeier. She is officially the world’s best literary agent—the supportive, insightful, always-right, hand-holdy kind—and I am so grateful I get to be a part of her close knit author community.

What’s Your Passion? Find Out Right Now!

Thursday, August 2nd, 2012

It’s happiness time!

I had a blast writing this feature for Health magazine’s July/August 2012 issue about how to pinpoint your passion—by which I mean your non-work, deep in your soul, smile on your face in your free time, kind of passion.

The story features great advice from people I look up to who I was lucky enough to interview, including Martha Beck, my psychology crush Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Ph.D., positive psychology guru Christopher Peterson, Ph.D. and life coach Cheryl Richardson.

You can read the full story on How to Find Your Passion here on Health.com.

Bright Side Up & Bloomspot Treats!

Friday, April 13th, 2012

You know I love sharing things that can make us feel happier in our every day lives. And this month, I’m teaming up with Bloomspot so you can get happy in a dose of double goodness: through my happiness tips and their treats!

Do you know about Bloomspot? It’s a gorgeous site that offers locals deals for high-end restaurants, spa treatments, drinks, getaways, tasting menu specials and more. It’s in about a dozen major U.S. cities so far, but it’s spreading it’s blooms and hopefully reaches a spot near you soon. And this month, we’re teaming up to spread the happy!

And yesterday, the site introduced their new makeover and…me. Because for the month, I’ll be sharing some of my happiness tips about living the good life. Check out this post for the yummy giveaways and news about the special days (uh, hello, Treat Yourself Thursdays?).

And today, you can check out my first post on the site! In it, I talk about a very surprising new study that answers this question:

Is it better to engage in a lot of little luxuries or throw your eggs into one big one?

You can find the answer here, in my first happiness tip.

So check out the post, Like it and Share It on Facebook, Tweet it, or pin it to your Pinterest board! Especially because among all the giveaways and goodies Bloomspot will be offering all month, if you don’t yet have your copy of Bright Side Up, a little birdie just might be carrying some books in her basket…

Don’t miss out. Come join me in the fun!
